Remote job probation periods: what to clarify before your first day

A probation period should explain how both sides will test the working relationship. It should not leave the employee guessing about pay, expectations, reviews or what happens at the end.

Probation is part of employment, not a free trial

A probation period is a defined period near the start of employment when the employer assesses performance and the employee decides whether the role is a fit. It is different from a short pre-employment assessment and should not be used to disguise unpaid productive work.

Rules differ by country and worker status. Acas says there is no general UK legal requirement to use probation, while Australia's Fair Work Ombudsman says employees on probation continue to receive the same minimum entitlements as other employees. These are jurisdiction-specific examples, not a universal rule.

Get the duration and employment terms in writing

Check the start and end dates, whether the period can be extended and which document contains the rule. Confirm pay, benefits, leave, working hours and notice during probation instead of assuming that the headline offer applies unchanged.

For a remote role, also record who manages you, which time zone controls meetings, how equipment is provided and whether location or office-attendance conditions change during probation.

Turn vague performance language into observable milestones

Ask what successful completion looks like for the actual role. Useful measures connect to deliverables, quality, learning, collaboration or customer outcomes; a phrase such as ‘good cultural fit’ is not enough to plan against.

Acas recommends regular formal reviews and informal check-ins so progress, feedback and support are visible before the final decision. Ask for review dates, the evidence used and the person who decides the outcome.

Clarify support, extension and the final decision

Find out how training, accessibility needs, illness or delayed access to systems will be handled. A remote employee cannot demonstrate work that depends on equipment, permissions or feedback the employer has not provided.

Ask what happens if probation is extended or not passed: who explains the reasons, what notice applies, whether there is a review route and which company property must be returned. Acas advises UK employers to set extension conditions clearly and confirm an extension before the original period ends. Other jurisdictions may use different rules.
