Your CV is not a biography: how to make the relevant evidence easy to find

A recruiter should be able to understand what you can do, where you have applied it and why it matters to this role — without reading your entire career history.

Write for the decision a recruiter has to make

A CV is not a record of every task you have ever performed. It is a short, accurate argument for your fit with a particular opportunity. The reader is usually trying to answer three questions quickly: what can this person do, what evidence supports that claim, and is the evidence relevant to this role?

Start with the work that answers those questions. A concise profile, the most relevant experience, concrete projects and clearly named skills give the reader a route through the document. Older or less relevant experience can be shorter without being hidden.

Turn responsibility into evidence

Generic responsibilities are hard to compare. Replace them with a clear description of the work, the context and the result when you can verify it. Do not invent metrics just because a template asks for them.

Use the role description honestly

Before applying, identify the few requirements that genuinely overlap with your experience. Move related examples higher in the CV and use the employer’s terminology only when it accurately describes your work. This is tailoring, not copying keywords or claiming skills you do not have.

For a quick role-fit check before you edit your CV, use our remote-role checklist. It helps separate a relevant role from one that only resembles your current title.
